DUTCH GRAND PRIX

EXCELLENT BRABHAM OPENS HIS ACCOUNT

Apart from winning the race at Cordoba Jack Brabham had had a frustrating start to the defence of his World Championship crown but all that was forgotten at Zandvoort where the Australian was comfortably the class of the field, winning the Dutch Grand Prix from pole position with some ease, despite a spirited chase by Phil Hill.

ZANDVOORT ZAYINGS

  • Although the margin of victory was only 6.5 seconds, Brabham never looked like being caught.
  • However, Phil Hill drove a splendid race with the Ferrari and set fastest lap on his penultimate tour.
  • Ireland held 3rd place for every one of the 75 laps but could not match the pace of the two ahead of him.
  • Once again, only one of the Ferraris was anything like competitive. Von Trips is getting rather frustrated by it all.
  • There were those who doubted Jim Clark's front row time and indeed, the young Scot quickly dropped behind the first three. He had a race long battle with Bonnier, beating the Swede by just 2.5 seconds.
  • All three Yeoman Credit cars finished but none made it into the points.
  • Moss was mortified to finish two laps behind. The car was unchanged from its Monaco victory but handled dreadfully all weekend.
  • There is talk of Rob Walker buying a Cooper for Stirling but Brabham may have something to say about that.
  • Both Scarabs started and finished. They are not fast but seem very reliable.
