SILVER CITY TROPHY RACE - Snetterton

FLOCKHART WINS FOR B.R.M

Billed as an F.1 race with some F.2 cars included, the Snetterton race was really more an F.2 race with a few F.1 cars included. Jack Brabham was clear favourite but a detatched rear wheel early in the race left Ron Flockhart to fend off the challenge from Hill and Ireland in the Lotuses and give B.R.M a victory in what is almost certain to be the penultimate appearance for the front-engined cars from Bourne.

ENTRY

Twenty-two cars arrived for this mixed F.1 and F.2 race, with the smaller cars making up the majority of the entry list. The F.1 list looked a little sparse with only 8 cars in the list. Indeed, one of those, Ian Raby's Cooper was only 200c.c.s over being an F.2 car. Brabham brought one works Cooper while both B.R.M and Lotus entered two. The Lotus drivers were the usual pairing of Ireland and Graham Hill but the B.R.Ms were in the hands of Ron Flockhart and Bruce Halford. Jo Bonnier had requested that his regular car not be used so Flockhart drove Schell's regular car with Halford using the third car that Flockhart had driven several times this season. As well as Raby's Cooper, David Piper came along with his Lotus 16 while the other F.1 car was the Tommy Atkins Cooper Maserati for Roy Salvadori.

Fourteen F.2 cars made up the rest of the entry and thirteen of those were Coopers. Thank goodness for Mike Parkes in the Fry Climax! Chris Bristow was back in the British Racing Partnership's Borgward-powered car after his almost successful debut in the F.1 car at Oulton Park. The quicker Coopers, apart from Bristow, were the Belgian T.51 of Pilette, McKee in Jim Russell's car and Chris Summers with his dark blue version. The rest of the Coopers were privately owned and can be seen in the practice time list.

RACE

The race can be summed up very easily. Brabham lost a wheel on lap 6 leaving Ron Flockhart to hold off the Lotuses of Ireland and Graham Hill who swapped places in 2nd and 3rd during the race but the Scot was in 2nd at the end. David Piper made it a Lotus 2-3-4 ahead of Chris Bristow who won the F.2 class in the B.R.P Cooper Borgward. Bruce Halford in the second B.R.M was not as quick as Flockhart and could manage only 7th, behind F.2 runner-up Mike McKee. The biggest disappointment, once again in all honesty, was Salvadori in Atkins' F.1 Cooper Maserati who struggled along all afternoon and could only manage 10th place, down among the F.2 cars.
